Tonight I'm awake because two things happened. I was just nodding off when I heard a congregation of people gathering outside. They seemed a little excited and agitated. I heard something about an explosion nearby. I hadn't heard anything but it turns out I can tune a lot out when I'm sleeping or falling asleep. I have to in order to sleep in such close quarters with tv's and radios going.
Finally I hear my neighbor come in (she apparently eats pickled pig balls, just an interesting tidbit) and she was answering her phone. Her boss informed her that there was no need to report to the office because the explosion was outside the base. She told him that they were standing by in their battle gear but she would stand down. Now here I was in my t-shirt and underwear wondering what was going on. Obviously my situational awareness needs some work.
The excitement died down and we were just readying to turn in for the night and I was laying in my bed hoping for sleep but not feeling it coming. Then my bed started to shake. At first I thought one of my roommates might be having too much fun then it happened again but more forcefully and I knew it was an earthquake so I jumped out of bed. It shook for a moment more before it stopped. My neighbors guy friend came in and said to her, "did you feel that? How much they going to throw at me tonight? I won't be able to get any sleep." I hear you on that one.
This may turn out to be a very intense tour but I just hope I survive with no injuries or mental issues due to PTS. Convoys will make me the most fearful but I will do everything I can to fight for myself and my team if something happens. It most likely won't but it would be stupid to think it could never happen to me.
